According to experts, active play is not only essential in developing children’s thinking, moving, communication, social and imitation skills; it also encourages their enjoyment of physical activity which has long term health benefits. Yet according to recent studies, infants are spending less time on lively play leading to a generation of inactive, overweight children.

Babies and small toddlers are naturally chubby with their little pot bellies and chubby thighs. However, according to an expert from Liverpool University 23.6% of children under four are overweight, with 1 in 10 classed as clinically obese. The study revealed that ‘puppy fat’ amongst infants is now at a dangerously high level which can lead to health problems later on in life. Obesity alone is harmful, however it can also trigger type II diabetes in children.

Experts believe a change in lifestyle is the reason for increased inactivity. Judy More, a Paediatric Dietician with the British Dietetic Association agrees. “Children are less active today. Many don’t walk as much as they’re driven everywhere and children don’t play outdoors as they would have done.”
